many snakes are beneficial to mankind because they eat the rodents that destroy our food supply, and many will actually consume poisonous snakes. When we built our house, we saw a moccasin with a coral snake being his lunch, about half way down the moccaisns throat. Black snakes, and many others are our friends that destroy the viper population around our house.
I’m not afraid of snakes as long as I see them first. Depending on the species (poisonous or not) will determine my caution in dealing with them.
Humans have evolved to catch sight of a snake or other movement out of the corner of our eye… and even when not moving… of course, in the old days, monkeys/humans didn’t know which snakes were poisonous… and didn’t want to find out…
